A little over twenty-two years ago I heard for the first...
A little over twenty-two years ago I heard for the first time the words "Christian Science." I had been a semi-invalid for about fourteen years; and for four years before hearing of Christian Science I had been worse than ever, being at times entirely helpless, and having to be carried from my bed to a couch where I usually spent my days. I was suffering from four so-called incurable diseases, valvular heart trouble, spasms, an internal trouble for which there was no relief except through an operation that could not be performed owing to the condition of my heart, and an injury to the spine, received from a fall. This last-named trouble, our physician had told my husband, was going to the brain, and meant either death or insanity.
We had tried various physicians and anything that promised even a slight relief from almost unbearable suffering, but all in vain. I was growing worse, so I gladly consented to try Christian Science. My daughter sought and found a lady who was a Scientist. She, in turn, saw a practitioner, who lovingly said she would help me. The lady told her of my condition. This was on a Saturday. She made an appointment for me to see the practitioner on Monday, but I was sure it would be impossible for me to do this. She gave me absent treatment on Saturday and Sunday, and owing to this dear woman's clear concept of "perfect God and perfect man" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 259), on Sunday I was enabled to rise from my couch and take part in clearing away the dishes after dinner. My daughter thought I had gone crazy, and sought to induce me to lie down; but I assured her I felt fine, and persuaded her to go to her Sunday school. I commenced to sing, something I had not even thought of since my dear mother had passed on, four years previously. I did not know what was causing me to sing; I just could not help it, I felt so happy. I was able to see the practitioner on Monday; and after about six weeks' treatment I was able once more to attend to my home and do all the work, including washing, for my family of four.
In these twenty-two years I have had many proofs of the efficacy of Christian Science, and have had healings of various kinds—moral, physical, and financial. Nine years ago my daughter married and went away from Baltimore to live. This to my human sense of love was a severe trial, and I did not meet it in Science as I should. I allowed a sense of grief to take possession of my consciousness, with the result that in a short while I was taken with an illness which developed into tuberculosis. I refused to have help, saying I did not want to stay here. This went on for three years, until the day came when I, and all who saw me, thought I was passing on. My husband begged me to let him send for a friend, one who we knew had done some wonderful work in Science. I consented, so he telephoned to her and soon she was with me. Two hours later I was sitting in a chair eating my dinner, and the next week I was in church. The cough continued for several months, but with the help of a practitioner and my own study and application of the truth, I was entirely healed. That was over five years ago.
