The time has come for me to express publicly, as best I...
The time has come for me to express publicly, as best I can, my appreciation of Christian Science. I was reared in a home where the strictest moral standards were upheld, but where there was no formal religious instruction. I have often been grateful that no fixed doctrinal beliefs were in my consciousness to be overcome. At the age of about seventeen I began to feel the need of a religion. I attended different churches, and even tried to evolve a creed of my own, but my attempts were unsuccessful. My mother began to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and I then saw that she was being healed of long-standing physical ills, and being helped and comforted through a trying financial experience. She was also successfully doing work which would have been impossible to her while under medical care. Intuitively I knew that here was the religion I needed. Taking this for granted, I began its study. Upon my return to college, I began to attend Christian Science services. I really understood very little, but my faith that I was in the right path has been amply justified, and I have never consciously swerved from it. I have at times been negligent, and have made many mistakes; but always I have come to understand that, as our Leader says (Science and Health, pp. 265, 266), "The pains of sense are salutary, if they wrench away false pleasurable beliefs and transplant the affections from sense to Soul, where the creations of God are good, 'rejoicing the heart.' "
My husband is a faithful student of Christian Science, and together we are learning that our happiness and success are the result of constant, persistent endeavor to demonstrate the truth as we comprehend it.
Physical healings in our home have been many. So-called children's diseases, injuries, and minor ailments have been quickly overcome, leaving no ill effects. Occasional difficulties of a more serious nature have been opporutnities to prove the all-power of divine Love to heal and protect. One of our little girls, at the age of six months, had an abscess under her arm, the cause of which we did not know. After a week of treatment by a practitioner this condition disappeared suddenly. Another child, when very small, ran the sewing-machine needle completely through his finger, and I was obliged to turn the wheel to draw the needle out. Work in Science was begun immediately, and complete healing was almost instantaneous. After the child's first cry there was no evidence of pain. Diphtheria was overcome in less than a week. A violent case of earache, as an after effect of measles, was instantaneously healed while I was telephoning for help. The child stopped screaming and fell asleep, and there was no return of the trouble. My eldest son has been healed, and also protected in traffic accidents, at the same time learning valuable lessons of obedience. There are problems of discipline I feel I could never solve without the aid of Christian Science.
