Over twenty years ago, when I was expecting my first...
Over twenty years ago, when I was expecting my first child, prominent physicians of New York City stated that I should be operated upon immediately, as I had "nephritis of the kidneys." Then a little seed of Truth, sown by a sister who had become interested in Christian Science, stirred in my consciousness, much to the amusement of our conventional family, who all imagined that it was some visionary dream. I purchased a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and refused to be operated upon, although my husband, who firmly believed I would die, begged me to save my life and submit to an operation. I read the book, and my son was born normally without complications. The nephritis passed forever.
Then I put the book aside; but when I was expecting my second child I at once sought a practitioner and had treatment; and the birth was harmonious. Then I became more interested, attended the church services, studied Science and Health, found my life broadening under the light of Truth and intelligent thinking, and that I was being freed from fear of drafts, criticism, condemnation, and so forth.
Living far from churches or practitioners, I limited my work until a Christian Scientist wrote me that Mrs. Eddy might be said to have worked out her life alone; and a friend stated, "Christian Scientists say that 'one with God is a majority.' " After this my work seemed to be more assured. Alone, without a practitioner, my last little boy came into the world in fifteen minutes.
