Spirituality

Christian Science is doing a great work in the world to-day by awakening men from the dream of life in matter to the spiritual sense of being. The material senses may seem very real as they seek to tell mortals of the substantiality of matter, and to convince them of the reality of material phenomena. Do not we see, touch, taste, and smell matter? mortals argue. Do not we experience the effects of what appears to be material law in various forms of disease? Is not our life to a great extent circumscribed by what appear to be material boundaries? In short, mortals believe themselves to be living in a finite world, the range of their outlook circumscribed and determined by the physical senses.

Now, while men have believed themselves to be limited by material sense, throughout the ages they have sought for a way of deliverance. They have recognized that, although they appeared to be under the domination of matter and its laws, there was another side to their existence, namely, a spiritual side. Were not honesty, unselfishness, purity, truthfulness, love, and the like, distinct from matter or material sense? And if so, surely they need not continue to be the slaves of materiality! Indeed, the fact of the existence of such qualities as those just mentioned points to the possibility of the final emancipation of mankind from the iniquitous thralldom of matter.

It is recognized by religious people generally that spirituality can be cultivated, and that spiritual consciousness can destroy materiality and its seeming effects. Christian Scientists recognize this, and many of them are striving earnestly to prove what they understand. And in this they are greatly aided by the truth about God, man, and spirituality, which Christian Science teaches. This Science reveals God as infinite Spirit and man as His idea, reflecting Him fully and perfectly. The real man is thus altogether spiritual, being conscious of the lesser right ideas which, with himself, constitute the spiritual universe. As this is recognized, the unreal nature of a material sense of man becomes plain, and the way made clear for the acquiring by mankind of an ever increasing measure of spirituality.
