Man's Individuality

On page 11 of "No and Yes" our Leader, Mrs. Eddy, writes, "Man has perpetual individuality; and God's laws, and their intelligent and harmonious action, constitute his individuality in the Science of Soul." Wonderful, indeed, is it to trace our real individuality back to "the Science of Soul," and to spiritual law expressed in health, righteousness, joy, freedom, immortality! In other words, sin, disease, and death, seeming to be materially externalized, do not enter into the experience of the real man. They are devoid of identity.

Christian Science teaches that spiritual man possesses no sense whereby to cognize any physical finity, and no medium through which to sin, grieve, suffer, or die. Every action and condition of the spiritual man is invariably aligned to God's laws. Accordingly the Christian Scientist, taking spiritual man as his model, trains himself to turn away from the contemplation of imperfection and to keep man's flawless individuality perpetually before his thought, because in no other way can he demonstrate it.

The age-long belief in matter and evil as expressed through mortal personality is not readily laid off. In fact, it is laid off no faster than the individuality of the true man is put on; hence the need of upholding in thought, word, and deed the standard of our true individuality as fast as we discern it. Paul urged this on the Colossians when he wrote, "Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him." On page 104 of "Miscellaneous Writings" Mrs. Eddy writes, "Clothed, and in its right Mind, man's individuality is sinless, deathless, harmonious, eternal." And farther on she continues, "In obedience to the divine nature, man's individuality reflects the divine law and order of being." Taking this statement as the basis of demonstration, it is apparent that the "right Mind" is the first gift to claim. Needless to say, this is the divine Mind, the only Mind. If sin tempts one, or a rumor of epidemic troubles a community, the true thinker knows that these discords do not emanate from the divine Mind. Therefore they actually are mindless. There is no law for the mental discord expressed as sin or sickness. So the Christian Scientist must cling to the fact that in his true being he is obedient to divine Principle and expresses harmony, law, and orderly action.
