The sermon in the Valley Stream Presbyterian Church...

Nassau Daily Review

The sermon in the Valley Stream Presbyterian Church on June 15, as reported in your issue of June 16, is certainly noteworthy for its breadth of thought and candor of statement. The clergyman's search for good in the thinking and in the religion of others, in order that he may enrich and ennoble his own, is a refreshing example of the broad application of the Golden Rule. That the clergyman does not fully agree with the teachings of Christian Science, to which he devotes a part of his sermon, has not been permitted to interfere with his sense of fairness.

The statement of the eminent clergyman that the power of the so-called human mind was not initiated by Christian Jesus finds an instant acquiescence on the part of Christian Scientists. Christian Scientists understand that it is not the human mind at all, but the all-powerful and all-knowing divine Mind, which is God, whose application to healing sickness and casting out devils Christ Jesus demonstrated.

On page 146 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," the textbook of this religion, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has written: "Divine Science derives its sanction from the Bible, and the divine origin of Science is demonstrated through the holy influence of Truth in healing sickness and sin. This healingpower of Truth must have been far anterior to the period in which Jesus lived. It is as ancient as 'the Ancient of days.' It lives through all Life, and extends throughout all space."
