"Suffer little children to come unto me"
"SUFFER little children to come unto me, and forbid them not." This saying of Jesus, taken form the sixteenth verse of the eighteenth chapter of Luke, has become of great value to one mother since taking up the study of Christian Science. Jesus made this statement to his disciples when they rebuked the parents who had brought their children to him for his blessing upon them. We notice in this instance that the parents did not go by themselves to Christ Jesus for help for their children, but brought the children that they might receive the blessing directly from him.
In the next verse we see why Jesus said, "Suffer little children to come unto me;" for he further continued, "Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein." Jesus knew that the child-thought, uninstructed by material learning, is comparatively free from the encumbrances, doubts, and fears with which the more mature thought is impregnated, and is thus ready to listen to the voice of Truth and receive the blessings which are always at hand for all those who are ready to receive them.
The child reared in Christian Science should be taught from his earliest moments to turn to God instantly for his help, instead of waiting first to run to his human father or mother to work for him. The writer knows one mother who, from the time the toddling baby got her first bumps, used to turn the child immediately to God, saying: "Don't ever wait to come to mother for help, but turn to God instantly, right where you are. Mother has no power of her own to heal, nor can you always reach her immediately, but God is right with you wherever you are, and if you turn to Him you will receive your help instantly."
