The Gift That Meets the Need

THE world commends a cheerful giver. And as a rule it will be found that a cheerful giver is a generous giver, because an act that brings one genuine cheer is likely to be frequently repeated and extended.

Many are the avenues provided to-day for systematic giving,—civic, social, and religious,—and it is to the credit of the age that through these various channels the needy, as a general rule, are being cared for as never before. The commercial world is recognizing and proving that only by giving — giving real service and true values — can an enterprise enjoy permanent prosperity; hence, the Golden Rule is coming more and more to be the basic policy in business. And not only in the commercial world does prosperity go hand in hand with the spirit of giving, but all lines of endeavor are strengthened and enriched thereby.

The approach of the holiday season brings annually a fresh impetus to the spirit of giving and one may well consider at this time what giving means in its highest sense. The epistle of James contains a definition of the perfect gift. We read, "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights." According to this, the best, the really substantial gift is spiritual, not material; for surely only that which is spiritual comes from Spirit, "the Father of lights."
