All my life I had heard criticisms of Christian Science,...
All my life I had heard criticisms of Christian Science, and consequently I thought I knew all about it. Then there moved into our neighborhood a woman toward whom I felt greatly drawn. Though reserved and quiet, she was friendly and cheerful. About five years later, I heard of the healing of a case of gallstones brought about through the work of this Christian Scientist, and it interested me greatly. She sometimes talked to me about her beliefs, and I found myself beginning to respect them, whereas before I had scoffed. Eventually, I came to see how patiently and lovingly she sowed the seed of Truth.
The time came when I needed help and knew not where to turn. The younger of my children had a bad spell of tonsillitis, and just as she was slowly recovering, her sister took the complaint. My husband was out of town, not to return till the next night, and I was out of funds. My fear was that the trouble might develop into something still more grave; yet if I called a doctor I had no means of getting a prescription filled. The little one seemed so ill and in so much pain and fever, and I felt alone and helpless! Then my thought turned suddenly to my Christian Science neighbor. She had healed someone and had told me on different occasions of healings in her own family; could she not help this child?
I knew nothing of the method used in Christian Science, nor what a practitioner was, yet somehow I felt confident. Telling my little daughter to be patient until I returned, I ran a block to my friend's house, and when I asked her to help my child she promised to sit right down and take up the work. I ran back full of confidence and comfort, and went about getting breakfast. Presently the sick child called to me clearly to say that she had no pain and could swallow and breathe naturally. She ate her breakfast as usual and except for a certain weakness was quite healed, and the next day was perfectly normal.
