My parents first learned of Christian Science when I was...

My parents first learned of Christian Science when I was four years of age. My mother went to a practitioner to inquire how to go about the study of Christian Science, and she was lovingly told where to obtain a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. She was also reminded of the fact that God is Love. With this last thought in mind, my mother procured a copy of Science and Health and began to read it. While she was reading she was healed of tuberculosis, and I was healed of tapeworm. Later on, my father was healed of blood poisoning, and, still, later, of lumbago. We began to attend the Sunday services and the Wednesday evening testimony meetings, and I was enrolled in the Sunday school, which I attended until I reached the age limit.

In June, 1929, I completed my university course, and it is a joy to view, in retrospect, the demonstrations which were made at different times during my schooling. There were times when the way seemed dark, but the light of Love led steadily on to harmony and peaceful relationships. An outstanding experience came to me during the summer following my second year in high school. It seemed that a stubborn fear tried so to fasten itself in my thought that it was gradually becoming manifest on the body. When I asked for Christian Science treatment my attention was called to page 559 of Science and Health, where our Leader reminds us of the Bible admonition to read, study, and ponder the truth, which, though sweet at the first taste, will demand demonstration at the seemingly bitter second taste. I was advised to read the textbook through consecutively, and this I began to do, reading faithfully each night. The healing was a gradual one, but it took place before I had quite finished reading the book, though I was not at once aware of it. I am sincerely grateful that I am learning better how to replace erroneous and fearful thoughts, as they arise, with truthful affirmations, as well as with more sturdy denials. To say that I am grateful for the healing of that fear does not adequately express my joy; but I know that each wrong thought that is cast out does prove my gratitude for this demonstration.

An outstanding memory and source of true inspiration during my four years in college is the Christian Science Society of the University of Colorado. It was a joy to serve this society in several capacities, at different times; and it was helpful to attend the services and to hear the testimonies given by other students. I am thankful that Mrs. Eddy provided for the existence of such an organization where the university rules allow it (Manual, Art. XXIII, Sect. 8).
