[Written for the Sentinel]

Christmas Morn

As in a manger long ago,
In Bethlehem the blest,
The infant Saviour of the world
Found humble, homely rest;
So to the bosom sad and lorn
There comes the pledge of Christmas morn.

There comes the truth that Jesus taught,
To help and heal and guide;
Gently to lead wayfaring men,
Whatever skies betide—
The truth whose cloud-dispelling ray
Reveals the upward-climbing way.

Not ages past, nor time to come,
May compass with an earthly tale
The measure of that risen one
Whose promises can never fail—
That Son of God whose fadeless star
Shines ever where his faithful are.
