When Christian Science was first presented to me, I was...
When Christian Science was first presented to me, I was afraid to have anything to do with such a new religion. Having always been a very enthusiastic worker in an orthodox church, I thought the old-time religion was good enough for me; but after witnessing the healing of a very dear friend, whose case had been given up by the doctors as hopeless, I began to see there was more in it than appeared to the mortal eye. Now, after years of reading and studying, I am ready to say that it is of God, and therefore cannot be overthrown.
One experience I value much is the healing of the effects of a severe blow on the head, the flesh being torn from the bone and the forehead. I got into touch with a practitioner, with the result that the pain and physical discomfort were soon overcome, and in a short time the scar disappeared. Again, a beautiful healing was experienced when hot bacon fat was poured over my hand, no scar being left. I have had many proofs of God's protective care. Once, when alone in the house, I fell from the top of a high bureau, striking the top of my head and losing consciousness for a short time. On regaining consciousness I at once began to work, knowing the truth about God's child, and soon I was able to get to the bed, where lay my "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read all the afternoon, and although the sense of great discomfort persisted during the night, by next morning I was much better and with the help of a loving practitioner was soon entirely free from the difficulty. I have been healed of colds, influenza, stomach trouble, constipation, and many other ills, and have cause for more gratitude than words can express.
I am grateful for our literature, especially for the Christian Science Sentinel, which always brings an illuminating thought that helps me to solve some problem. I am also grateful for class instruction from a loyal, loving teacher. I have found that this new-old religion can be applied to every need, and that it never fails us when correctly applied. It has taught me that divine Love meets my every need, and my constant desire is to follow the words of Jesus, who said, "Freely ye have received, freely give."
