The testimonies in the Sentinel have been of such inexpressible...
The testimonies in the Sentinel have been of such inexpressible benefit to me that I feel the urge to add my bit. Blessed with health from childhood, I was led to become interested in Christian Science through attending the services with a friend. Gradually I grew to enjoy the simple services more than those of the church of which I became a member at the tender age of fifteen years, primarily because my sister was a member.
My first experience of healing was through the aid of a Christian Science practitioner. I had had a tooth crowned and the after effect was similar to a toothache: my face swelled until my eye was closed, and the dull pain kept me awake until one o'clock in the morning. A Christian Science practitioner in the building was called, and within twenty minutes I was fast asleep. When I arose that morning my face was normal, and no more pain was experienced. In 1915, while in Florida, I experienced a severe case of dysentery, and being unable to overcome it myself, I wired to a practitioner in Chicago, and within a few hours received relief. I also had much help for tender feet from which I suffered for many years.
The crowning demonstration was my great awakening in the spring of 1922. After a number of years of treatment at various times (sometimes constantly for months), I experienced a joyous freedom from all depression and worry, and felt as though I had taken on a new lease of life. I had been suffering from a peculiar mental state that I could not shake off; the loss in weight was from one hundred and forty pounds to ninety-nine pounds, and I had nearly forgotten how to smile. I was under the impression that I could do nothing as well as anyone else, and dreaded to attempt anything new for fear I could not accomplish it. It was a lethargic condition which seemed to grow worse, and I took no interest in anything. In fact, it was so pronounced and insistent that I longed to get away from myself and everyone else,—to slip away from this plane of existence,—as I thought I was a bore to all my friends and those with whom I came in contact. The kind practitioner, when I would talk so discouragingly of my case, would say, "You are getting better, and you will be better, better than you have ever been in your life." And I am grateful to say I am. I have been full of joy ever since that blessed demonstration. "Let the redeemed of the Lord say so."—(Miss) Bertha May Hembling, Los Angeles, California.
