It is now over fifteen years since I began the study of Christian Science. In that time God has been my only reliance, and no matter what test Science has been put to, when honestly applied it has never failed us. And I know that it never will, for, as it teaches, God is here and now, always an ever present help in trouble. It would take too long to mention all the benefits received and the difficulties overcome during the influenza epidemic. Although my son and I had this trouble, we ate what we desired, moved around where we wanted to, indoors and out, and read the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, while others around us, under different care, were ill for days, many passing on.

On a certain occasion I was called upon to pull water from a new well to water some horses. All around the ground was slippery and slanting, the cribbing extended about four feet above the surface. I had my foot against it as I pulled the water up, and a horse stood facing me. After pulling out a few buckets I spoke to her to move on, but in starting to leave she slipped and, rearing to save herself from falling, came down with all her weight, her hoof pinning my foot against the cribbing. My first thought was of God's goodness, and I bowed my head upon the top of the cribbing for support, working for myself as best I could. Then I started to go to the house, which under the circumstances seemed to be quite a distance away.

I was alone on the farm. We depend upon hired help for farm work, my son having a business in town. I had not reached the house when I saw an automobile turn in—it was bringing a strange workman. We had not had help for several days, and nothing but divine Love could have sent such a one—a good cook as well as a farm hand. That was about two o'clock in the afternoon. When I retired for the night and removed my shoe my foot was black from the toes to the instep. It was very painful all night, and I could not bear the weight of a sheet on it. I did not sleep much, but repeated "the scientific statement of being" (Science and Health, p. 468) nearly all night. In the morning I could not put my foot to the floor. My son returned to town and brought back a friend to help me, and also a pair of crutches for my use. After his return to town, or about three hours after, I arose, all pain having left me, and I could put my foot to the floor with my weight upon it. The crutches I never used. It was some time before I could walk without showing lameness, although the foot did not hurt.
