Christian Science is to me like a light in a home on a...
Christian Science is to me like a light in a home on a hill where the door is always open. It is the light of Truth beckoning all out of darkness into the consciousness of peace, joy, and spiritual power.
Eleven years ago, in an officers' training camp in El Paso, a sister gave me a pocket edition of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. At that time, being a member of an orthodox church, I only laughed at Christian Science. I would occasionally read line line or so; but gradually I read more each time. Four years of reading passed. In California a desire to commit suicide was met by reading Science and Health, and by realizing that God is my Life and nothing that I might do could destroy Life. With this realization I knew the thing for me to do was to work out my problem where I was. After this healing I consented to attend the Christian Science services. I went with slight ridicule in my thought, but this soon changed to joy. These services to me meant peace. Still I could not think of giving up my orthodox church.
Having had varied and numerous experiences off and on since childhood of joy, sorrow, and remorse in the theatrical profession, and having studied mining engineering, theoretically and practically, I thought it a great asset to be able to swear rapidly. This desire left me in an instant; even the thought of a curse word cut me like a knife. I smoked four or five packets of cigarettes, together with four or five cigars, every day. I thought it was no one's business but my own whether I smoked or not; that it was my affair, and that I was always going to smoke! One day I laid a half packet of cigarettes on the mantelpiece in disgust. All desire to smoke had completely left me in an instant. This I attribute to Christian Science. After these healings I soon became deeply interested and read the literature constantly during all my spare time.
