Christian Science came to me through a dear relative in...

Christian Science came to me through a dear relative in 1924, in India. It was at once accepted, as I was told it was the truth that healed both sin and sickness. Since then I have had many proofs of God's omnipotence and omnipresence, and each problem solved scientifically has led me higher. The first healing in my family was that of my wife of severe toothache. It was a few days after I received a copy of our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I at once wrote to a practitioner twelve hundred miles away, and the letter must have taken two days to reach her. But the same evening I found it was necessary to work; so I took up the textbook and explained as best I could to my wife the Lesson-Sermon on "God," as given in the Christian Science Quarterly. The healing came instantaneously. A few months later my wife was relieved of a serious internal trouble by the help of absent treatment; and again the healing was instantaneous.

I had a serious ailment for nine years before coming into Christian Science. The medical faculty were divided in their opinions, some saying that an operation would relieve me, others that it would leave me worse. This ailment made my life very bitter for two or three months every year, in spite of my being on a diet all the time. But without any special effort on my part, this ailment disappeared; and now I eat whatever I want.

Since the blessed day Christian Science came to me I have not been in bed through illness except for one short hour, when an attack of grippe seemed to seize me. I prayed over it, and to withstand the temptation to go to bed I went to keep an appointment with a friend. This friend remarked that I was out of sorts, but I told him not to notice any irregularity about me. After an hour's talk I had to admit that I was worse, and asked him to accompany me home. This he did, and I went to bed and sent him away. I prayed again, and tried many times to realize the truth as given in "the scientific statement of being" in our textbook (p. 468). Then came the words on page 228: "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God." With this I denied to the grippe any power, and there came an assurance of God's presence when the first few words of one of Mrs. Eddy's hymns, "O gentle presence, peace and joy and power" (Poems, p. 4), came to me. All this happened within an hour. I then opened my eyes, got up, dressed, attended to my regular business, and walked to the Reading Room and back, a distance of over two miles—healed.
