"According to thy faith"
To heal the sick and destroy error in the way shown by Christ Jesus and scientifically established by Christian Science, certain qualifications are necessary on the part of the practitioner or student. These qualifications include spiritual understanding of God, unselfed love, and absolute, unwavering faith in His power and goodness. Without these qualifications success in Christian Science practice is not possible.
It would seem that many of us, in our eagerness to obtain all the spiritual understanding possible, are perhaps inclined to overlook, or to underestimate, the importance of these other qualifications, namely, faith and love. It may be that we have taken it for granted that understanding is the allimportant attribute in Christian Science. And, with this in thought, we read the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly every day; we study the Scriptures; we search our Leader's writings, to gain still more of the letter of Science. And yet Mrs. Eddy assures us (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 113) that "the letter of Science plentifully reaches humanity to-day, but its spirit comes only in small degrees."
Would it not, then, seem desirable to devote more of our time, thought, and energy to the acquisition of this "spirit" of Science? Would it not be greatly to our advantage if we could add more faith, more love, to the understanding we already possess? It is sometimes well to remember that, as Paul declared, "the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life."
