Since 1909 I had been cognizant of the fact that such a thing as Christian Science existed, my sister being an earnest student. During the war I received a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, from a Christian Science welfare worker, but it did not seem to mean anything to me at the time.
May, 1925, found me aboard the U. S. S. West Virginia, maneuvering with the fleet in Hawaiian waters. I was disconsolate and downhearted, as life seemed to hold nothing for me. My joining the navy had been from very selfish motives.
One day, while in the recreation room, which is also the library aboard ship, my eyes rested on the textbook, which had been placed there by a loving Christian Science distribution committee. Impelled by a then unknown force, I obtained the book as soon as the library opened, and literally devoured it. Its consoling message of Love was very apparent to me then, although seven years before I could not intelligently grasp the contents. After reading less than two chapters I went to my locker and took to a porthole my few simple material remedies, realizing, as I cast them into the sea, that they were impotent.
