I am indeed grateful to testify to the healing power of Truth and Love as taught by Christian Science. I had been under a doctor's care all my life,—for twenty-four years,—and finally became an out-patient of the local hospital, continuing to be treated by my own doctor and the head doctor of the hospital for fifty-four weeks for consumption—with an injection each week. The last examination showed a bad condition of the glands, and one lung seriously affected.

At this point Christian Science came to my notice through a student who was in the house where I was then living. He kindly lent me a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. The reading of this book was a great joy to me; and the passage (p. 381), "Mortal mind cannot legislate the times, periods, and types of disease, with which mortals die," stood out. The pain and inflammation left, and natural bowel action took place daily for two years, although the doctor had said I had been born with a partially paralyzed bowel; also, glasses were discarded before I had finished reading the book.

About three months after this I had to descend into the valley and work up again to God. A loving practitioner took the case and faithfully, loyally, and steadily worked against every adverse condition. I was discouraged and depressed very often, but proof upon proof occurred until I learned not to fear. A sick hope, a sick body, a sick, complicated business, were the material evidences, and threats and persuasion were brought to bear on my use of Christian Science. About this time I had to give a message to the head packer in the basement of a London warehouse, and while talking to him through the goods grating I lost my balance. Underneath were benches, goods, packing cases, screws, nails, and wrenches lying about. As I slipped, the thought came to me, God delivers us from sin, disease, and death. I fell between a large case and a bench. Someone exclaimed, "Oh, a broken back!" Another said, "A broken neck!" They pulled the things out of the way and I stood up. A workman who belonged to the Red Cross insisted on making an examination, but he found no broken bones. He sent another for the foreman, but I succeeded in escaping to my room, and went right on rejoicing in the truth. This person insisted on seeing me home and coming the next day to make inquiries; but at eight o'clock the next morning I was in my place, perfectly well and unshaken.
