When I was a young girl I suffered from inflammation...
When I was a young girl I suffered from inflammation of the hip joint and was under medical treatment for a long time; but I was not completely healed, and could walk only with great difficulty. A friend of my father told us about Christian Science, whereupon we wrote to a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly gave me treatment. From week to week I could walk with less difficulty, and my leg was healed completely.
At that time I was fourteen years of age. I did not realize what Christian Science is and did not understand it; neither did I study it any more, but gave it up altogether, for I thought it was only for sick people, and I was well. Years passed, and those times of which Mrs. Eddy speaks in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 322) came: "The sharp experiences of belief in the supposititious life of matter, as well as our disappointments and ceaseless woes, turn us like tired children to the arms of divine Love." This was just my experience: I was liteally driven into "the arms of divine Love."
For years I suffered from a serious intestinal complaint, but did not consult a physician, as I had lost faith in doctors. But as this complaint continually grew worse, my relatives forced me to go to a doctor. He treated me for a while, but my condition did not improve, whereupon he sent me to another doctor. For a short time I was relieved, but then my condition grew even worse. During this time I often thought of Christian Science. As my relatives did not believe in it, I did not have the courage to mention it. I was afraid of everything, even of life, for I thought I should gain something by dying, and that there was no purpose at all in living.
