Several years ago I had the opportunity to prove the efficacy of Christian Science treatment in a case of surgery. When alighting from a public vehicle I was thrown violently against the corner, as the result of the vehicle unexpectedly jolting forward, and my shoulder and the upper part of my arm were very much hurt. Thinking little of it then, I proceeded on my journey, but the pain grew so steadily worse that, feeling sure the bone was broken, I returned home. By the time I had removed my clothes I was unable to life the arm, and had to support it in a sling. I had from the very first moment been applying all I knew of the truth I had learned in Christian Science, and as I turned to our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," my attention was arrested by a passage on page 424, where Mrs. Eddy says, "In medical practical objections would be raised if one doctor should administer a drug to counteract the working of a remedy prescribed by another doctor," and I took this to be a divine message to me. Then and there I determined that I would call in no doctor, but would rely entirely on Christian Science to set the bone. I called for the help of a practitioner, who faithfully assisted me to see the truth of being more clearly, and in a month's time I was again out and about with my arm quite healed and useful; and the setting proved to be a very perfect one. I suffered practically no pain all the time, although the arm was black from shoulder to elbow.
Another aspect of Love's allness was demonstrated at the same time. Because of the arm being disabled, in order that my immeidate financial obligations might be met it occurred to me that as the accident was the fault of the driver of the vehicle in which I was traveling, I should claim compensation from the company, but as I had been alone at the time I had no witnesses of any sort; neither had I taken any numbers of either employees or vehicle. I therefore had no other means of verifying my claim on the company than my own word. I admitted this in my appeal to them, and they sent their doctor to see me. For this occasion I had my arm photographed under X-rays, and the photograph proved to him that my claim was a legitimate one as to injury. The doctor learned of course that I was a Christian Scientist, and after saying the particular injury was a difficult one to heal, declared that I would not be able to use my arm under two months and that I must have massage even then. Before that time expired I received a very just, and, considering the lack of witness, a most generous check from the company, which entirely met my needs and proved as of old that God is "a very present help in trouble."
Words cannot express what I owe to the understanding of the allness of God, learned in Christian Science. For over twenty years it has met every need, mental, physical, and financial, for myself and for my two sons. They have often expressed themselves as having seen miracles happen in our family, but we know in Science that seeming evil is the only thing that is unnatural, for God is good, and good is in reality the only presence and power.
