Over thirteen years ago, led by the beauty and truth of the teachings of Christian Science to take up its study after a long-drawn-out skin trouble, starting from handling a socalled poisonous weed, I was forced to apply the rules laid down by Mary Baker Eddy in her book, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," before this pernicious error was permanently healed. Many faults of character were uncovered during this time, such as habits of criticism, intolerance, conceit, vanity, from which healing is still going on.
I rejoice greatly that I was led, from this first interest, into the joy and unity of church activity, and united with the Christian Science church. In the various activities required of its members I found that the same rules had to be applied to the overcoming of outward obstacles as had been necessary in the overcoming of bodily inharmonies; and in one instance I was led to an intensive study of that beautiful statement on page 566, lines 1 to 9, of Science and Health. These lines had remained in memory, but had never been applied literally until the working out of this problem, namely, one along the line of screen announcement in connection with the Christian Science lectures. I had received a number of promises that the advertising was acceptable and would be run, but after repeated efforts I was never able to see that the work had been accomplished and at last felt that something must be wrong.
In studying and working out the problem in my own mental domain I discovered a decidedly self-righteous thought about the whole problem of advertising in moving picture theaters. I was not sure that it was the right place for this holy work, and rather disliked the fact that this work had been given to me. Then the beautiful spirit of the lines referred to above came to me, that the Christ, Truth, came to heal every discordant condition, and that the humility and grace of this truth exemplified in the entire life of Jesus touched and lifted out of consciousness every phase of and every belief in error, revealing perfection. This apprehension of the spiritual idea dispels ignorance, with its false and self-righteous thoughts, and this resulted in greater love for all mankind and for every avenue of activity in our church work. Needless to say, it brought about the healing. A few simple words over the telephone were all that was needed to find, later on, that a complete demonstration had been made not only for this one time, but for future occasions; and not only in this one instance, but in another, when one who had declared it a positive rule that no outside advertising should be run has been gladly running the slide ever since upon request.
