For many years I searched in vain for a religion or a philosophy capable of furnishing answers to the great questions of life which, at some time in his experience, come to everyone with more or less insistence according to his temperament.

Christian Science is the only religion which has given me completely satisfying answers to these questions, and in addition I have found that faithful study and practical application of its teachings not only remove intellectual doubts and questionings, but destroy discord of every kind. It makes no difference whether these are expressed mentally as unhappiness or physically as disease.

I have had many instances of the power of Christian Science to prevent and remove minor ailments, such as the colds, chills, influenza, rheumatism and lumbago which had come to be regarded as the inevitable incidents of everyday life. During the last twenty years I have never spent a day in bed, nor have I been prevented, through sickness, from doing anything I had to do or from going anywhere I had to go. At times I have been sorely pressed and extremely discouraged; but I rejoice, and say it in grateful humility, that either by myself or with the help of a practitioner I have always managed to pull through. No drugs or medicine of any kind have been resorted to during this period of twenty years, and every physical inharmony has been successfully disposed of by Christian Science treatment, sometimes instantaneously, always without any period of convalescence. After one treatment the cigarette smoking habit, which had become a vice, fell away from me. The desire for smoking was completely destroyed, and has never returned.

In business relationships and business problems Christian Science has been particularly efficacious. Some years ago two large industrial concerns came into conflict over a question of the boundary separating their adjacent properties. When I came upon the scene things had become so serious that legal proceedings were being instituted as the only means of settling the dispute. Matters were rendered more difficult by the fact that the managing director on the other side was stubbornly uncompromising, and had the reputation for being one of the most unaccommodating men in the district. It was part of my duty to see the matter settled, and I soon realized that Christian Science was the only means by which a lasting settlement could be secured. In spite of the pending litigation I decided to call on this man, whom I had never seen before. The first few minutes of the interview bore out all that had been said about him, and more, but my small understanding of Christian Science helped me to keep in view something of the real man which I knew must be there in spite of the apparent gruffness, with the result that presently we found ourselves telling one another stories. Then he produced his title deeds and plans, a thing he had always previously refused to do, and before we parted we had the basis of an agreement drawn up by which the whole difference was composed to our mutual advantage and without any litigation.

It is perfectly obvious that if some measure of good will and understanding could reconcile the apparently conflicting interests of those two corporations, they can remove whatever is causing inharmony or obstruction among the nations of the world to-day; and in proportion as they are brought into the councils of the nations, so will the angel-promise of "on earth peace, good will toward men" become apparent in the world's affairs and in the affairs of each individual composing those nations.
