On page 192 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, it is written, "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power."
A number of years ago I was very sick. After months of medical treatment an operation was performed in the hope that serious organic trouble would be cured. After months of convalescing, however, I was in the same physical condition, and in a much worse mental condition than before, because I was utterly discouraged. Then word came to me one day from my family saying that a brother must immediately undergo an operation in order to save his life. It seemed impossible for me to bear to have him suffer an experience similar to that I had had. And very gently there came to my longing thought to help him, the whisper that perhaps Christian Science could heal him. I had never thought of Christian Science before as able to heal anyone. But with this hope came the desire to visit a Christian Science practitioner. A sign in a window with the words "Christian Science Practitioner" was remembered, and a visit was made to that practitioner. The visit resulted in my own healing; for, as Mrs. Eddy says in the words quoted above, "Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power."
The Christian Science textbook was purchased, and an unused Bible brought out and studied for the first time. I had always had a desire to understand and love God, but prejudice, due to early religious training, had closed my thought. My joy was very great when I learned from the Christian Science textbook that "God" and "Principle" are synonymous terms; for I knew that I could then begin to understand God. With earnest, continuous study of the Bible and Mrs. Eddy's writings, my health steadily improved, and the divine qualities of patience, unselfishness, honesty, and many others, have continued to become more natural to me each day.
