"There is lifting up"

One of the great Bible verities that mankind has largely overlooked or ignored, has been brought to light and to practical demonstration by that inspired "key" to the Scriptures, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy; and this valuable truth is concerned with the blessings promised to men throughout the Old and New Testaments.

If men had earlier accepted the fact that the Bible promises of salvation not only may be but must be applied here and now, they could have progressed along lines which would have spared humanity much suffering; but the erroneous suggestion gained ground that whereas one might be improved morally while here, suffering was inevitable, and was often sent by God to improve character, until by passing through death one came to heaven and could suffer no more.

Mrs. Eddy exploded this theory many years ago, as one can see from a passage in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 241), which reads: "From a religious point of view, the faith of both youth and adult should centre as steadfastly in God to benefit the body, as to benefit the mind. Body and mind are correlated in man's salvation; for man will no more enter heaven sick than as a sinner, and Christ's Christianity casts out sickness as well as sin of every sort." This clear logic has undoubtedly revolutionized former theories; for now very few voices are raised, either in speech or in print, to declare that God makes or allows suffering; indeed, the change in religious thought on this subject is as remarkable as that earlier one concerning the nature of hell and eternal damnation, a theory well-nigh obsolete to-day.
