"Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless...
"Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits: who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all they diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies; who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's" These words of the Psalmist express the thought of my heart, and my experience.
In 1918 I was stricken with grippe. After five or six months I seemed to get well, but remained subject to colds, bronchitis, and weakness. In the spring of 1925 I began to languish, and it was only with difficulty that I did my work. I suffered constantly from my back, and this condition lasted all summer. In the fall I had to keep to my bed. I consulted several good physicians, who disagreed on my case and had me take all kinds of medicine. One of them discerned a carious vertebra—in other words, tuberculosis of the spine. He ordered me to rest on a board, and allowed me to sit up only to eat my meals. This was very distressing to all the family, for we had already sufferd much from physical, moral, and financial difficulties. We had accepted all these as coming from God; but at this moment, seeing my end approaching, my wife and I were discouraged and could no longer accept them as coming from a God who is Love.
It was at this time that a friend came to tell us of Christian Science, and encouraged us strongly to call a practitioner. I doubted very much whether Christian Science could help my case; but my wife insisted; so a practitioner was called, and an absent treatment given me. Immediately I felt great benefit, and this gave me confidence in Christian Science; so much so that after reading the ninety-first psalm several times, I slept, and did not awaken until morning, something which had not happened for a long time. The next day the practitioner invited me to come to her home. where she lovingly received me and recommended the reading of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, as well as the study of the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly. On leaving I felt like a new man, and upon my return home began to read the textbook. I very quickly regained my strength, and was able to resume my business almost immediately. Three months later I was digging in my garden, and could lift heavy weights without difficulty. Now I work from twelve to fifteen hours a day with joy and gratitude in my heart. I can say, with all the glory due to God, that Christian Science alone healed me.
