During the winter of 1918 I was called to Washington to engage in War Camp Community Service work. This call came while I was in the Middle West nursing a dear relative through a severe attack of an epidemic, of which I, too, manifested the worst symptoms. However, I felt that I must carry on my work, and was sure that the strength to do so would be given me.
When I arrived in Washington, my condition was such that I was immediately ordered to bed. I managed to send off a telegram to a practitioner in Boston before retiring. She wired a reply, which never reached me, but I knew the telegram had been received by the marvelous change that took place; for I awoke in the middle of the night with a wonderful sense of peace. All sense of inharmony had lifted, and I felt that I was surrounded and protected by the power of Love. Then I realized how complete and instantaneous had been the healing. Those who saw me the next morning were indeed impressed by the change. I was able at once to engage in very strenuous work involving long hours and great activity. Christian Science sustained me through this work, and after my healing on that night I had no return of the trouble.
Not only have I experienced many beautiful healings in Christian Science, but for over three years I have been able to devote my entire time to healing the sick. Previous to this I had engaged in various kinds of social service work, but I am now convinced that the practice of Christian Science is the greatest possible service one can render to humanity. What can be a more joyful and inspiring work than showing others how to free themselves, and taking away the ills that hamper humanity?
