In a letter on Christian Science in your recent issue, which the writer invites me to refute, I can find nothing sufficiently definite to require refutation. He does, however, seriously misquote my last letter. In speaking of the so-called human mind, I made the following statement: "Since this so-called mind is admittedly as capable of producing evil as good, there can be no scientific healing in this direction," which is very different from his misquotation. Christian Science teaches definitely that evil does seem to exist in this so-called mind, which Paul refers to as the "carnal mind," and which he says is "enmity against God." Christian Science teaches that evil does not exist in the divine Mind, God. When Paul enjoined mankind to "let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus," he evidently intended us to put away the errors or falsities of the carnal mind and accept the eternal facts of being as they exist in the divine Mind. Evil appears to have less reality and disappears as the light of Truth displaces this false consciousness. Christ Jesus put it concisely when he stated, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."
A mathematician does not condemn as erroneous the science of mathematics because he may fail to demonstrate its rules. The Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, Mrs. Eddy, writing in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (pp. 348, 349), says: "I have never supposed the world would immediately witness the full fruitage of Christian Science, or that sin, disease, and death would not be believed for an indefinite time; but this I do aver, that, as a result of teaching Christian Science, ethics and temperance have received an impulse, health has been restored, and longevity increased. If such are the present fruits, what will the harvest be, when this Science is more generally understood?"
