Guidance

While crossing a busy thoroughfare, a mother and her little daughter were caught in a heavy traffic jam. The child, becoming frightened, attempted to jerk away from her mother's hand and run across the street. The mother, holding firmly, looked down and said: "There is nothing to fear. Can you not trust God to lead you safely across? He is guarding and guiding us." The little child had learned in the home and in the Christian Science Sunday School to love the thought of God's protecting care; so at this reminder the tense muscles in her hand relaxed, and the troubled expression vanished from her face as she looked up with a smile. Her hand then rested quietly in that of her mother, and the journey across was finished in peace and safety.

When the arguments of lack, or fear, or doubt come crowding about us, instead of accepting them as realities with power to disturb or to harm, should we not, with childlike confidence, place our hand in that of our Father-Mother God, let Him guide us, and so find our peace and safety through the realization of Love's presence and power? Mrs. Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 347), "Those who know no will but His take His hand, and from the night He leads to light."

And how may those who seek God's guidance know His will, take His hand, and walk in the light of that understanding of the truth which makes free? These questions are answered on page 495 of the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, where we read: "Question.—How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science? Answer.—Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love."
