Several years ago I seemed to become engulfed in the darkness of despair, despondency, and consequent inactivity. I had to give up my work in an office, and all I seemed able to do was to cry day and night, until I was a burden to my loved ones. In this condition, at the advice of a prominent physician who was a friend of the family, I was lovingly placed in a sanitarium by my relatives, and later taken to another. I remained in these sanitariums for the greater part of a year, and returned home apparently well; but I knew I was far from well mentally, and that I needed something the physicians could not give me.
Having a cousin in a distant town who was a Christian Science practitioner, I went there. I stayed with her about two months and began to learn of God. I returned home again, but with a brighter outlook; and with the help of another loving practitioner I was soon practically freed from depression, despair, self-pity, self-condemnation, and sensitiveness, and knew that I had started on the right path. I was able to lay aside glasses which I had worn constantly for years, and my recovery was apparent to everyone who had seen and sympathized with me in my illness. Before long I was able to return to work with a wonderful feeling of freedom, strength, and joy. Since then, through earnest study of Christian Science, I have had many healings, both physical and mental, some of them without the aid of a practitioner — by reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy.
I am very greatful for an increasing understanding of God and His perfect creation. I am grateful for membership in The Mother Church and a branch church; for work in the Sunday school; for our periodicals; for our church services, and for the wonderful blessings this revelation is bringing to all mankind. — (Miss) Amie R. DeMar, Lakewood, Ohio.
