Recent issues of your good paper report criticisms of Christian Science by an evangelist. These criticisms show a decided lack of correct information on the subject. The reverend gentleman's statement that Christian Science "is neither Christianity nor science" will, I hope, lead readers to consult the works of Mrs. Eddy on the subject, especially "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Theses works will show them that Mrs. Eddy has accepted nothing as being either Christian or scientific but that which is of God and manifests divine intelligence. She writes in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (pp. 4, 5): "Whatever is not divinely natural and demonstrably true, in ethics, philosophy, or religion, is not of God but originates in the minds of mortals." It can thus be seen at a glance that a teaching which so definitely defines real Science as nothing less than the intelligence of God, must itself be true Science and withal Christian. It is for this very reason that Christian Science does not, as alleged, disregard the atonement, but on the contrary defines with scientific accuracy the relation of man to his Maker, through which is demonstrated the immortality of man and the dominion of men over all evil. "Do I believe in the atonement of Christ?" asks Mrs. Eddy; and she answers her own question thus (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 96): "I do; and this atonement become more to me since it includes man's redemption from sickness as well as from sin. I reverence and adore Christ as never before. It brings to my sense, and to the sense of all who entertain this understanding of the Science of God, a whole salvation."
