I had been reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures"...
I had been reading the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, about three weeks. After a Wednesday evening testimony meeting a friend noticed the absence of my glasses. (I had used glasses for many years and had been told by specialists in Massachusetts and Ohio that I would always need them.) I remarked to this friend, "I can't keep them in repair." This friend said, "That means you don't need them any more." I then realized how little I had actually used them, and many thoughts flashed through my mind, the two most important being: This is what is considered a miracle in the Bible, and how could this happen to me? And, I do not understand this truth, but I love it.
On arriving home I opened the textbook at random and read on page 135, "The miracle introduces no disorder, but unfolds the primal order, establishing the Science of God's unchangeable law." Then I thought, How wonderful; that is an answer to my query! I closed the book and opened it again. My eyes rested on these lines, on page 140: "The Christian Science God is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death." I have never resorted to glasses again. This occurred over ten years ago. The healing was wonderful. The significance of these two statements was emblazoned on my thought, and my trust in God was established.
For the Christian Science Sunday School I am profoundly thankful, as I have had two boys attending it since the beginning of my study. Many problems have been worked out by them. For instance, the elder boy was bitten by a dog, but I knew nothing of it until I saw five tiny scabs (the marks of the teeth). This boy had a wonderful healing of a broken arm. A practitioner was immediately called and the child taken to a surgeon. On page 401 of the textbook Mrs. Eddy says, "Until the advancing age admits the efficacy and supremacy of Mind, it is better for Christian Scientists to leave surgery and the adjustment of broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon, while the mental healer confines himself chiefly to mental reconstruction and to the prevention of inflammation." The surgeon felt he must refuse the case, as the dislocation and adjustment necessary could not be taken care of in the office. For several hours he assisted in trying to locate another surgeon. However, no one could be reached who would take the case unless the child was sent to the hospital for three weeks; and this seemed quite unnecessary. The accident occurred at five o'clock in the afternoon. At eight o'clock the child was taken home, put to bed, and slept all night. Later a surgeon was finally reached who consented to take the case provided an X-ray photograph was taken, an anæsthetic administered, and a probable stay of three days in the hospital allowed. In the morning the loving practitioner came to the house. Not more than five minutes after leaving the room I was called back into the room. Adjustment had taken place. The arm was in perfect alignment. No pain, no anæsthetic, no hospital! How marvelous to feel God's presence!
