Consecration

Grant us, O Love divine, the listening ear,
That we Thy harmony sublime may hear;
The seeing eye, that we may recognize
Thy universe, not seen by finite eyes;
An understanding heart, that we may know
The human need—that Love heals all its woe.

Then grant a grain of faith, that we may see
That all things good are possible to Thee.
Of gratitude, confer a liberal store,
That we may love and praise Thee more and more.
Of charity made broad enough to find
Our brother's virtues, to his faults be kind.

Such measure of obedience assign
To bend the human will to the divine;
A meed of moral courage, that may be
A source of justice, strength, and honesty;
An unselfed love,—of this a double share,—
To serve mankind and help its burdens bear.

Humility, if this Thy gift may be,
Yielding all good, all power, alone to Thee;
This is enough—what more can be desired
Than courage, faith, and hope, by Love inspired,
Than vision true, and understanding rare,
Borne high on wings of consecrated prayer?
