Being always an ardent believer in God, also a member...

Being always an ardent believer in God, also a member, many years ago, of the Baptist church, and having been baptized, I thought it erroneous that I should still be subjected to all the ills of carnality and seemingly be just as unprotected as the most carnally minded.

Several years ago I was taken into the Christchurch hospital suffering from ulcers of the stomach which caused hemorrhage. It required months in which to pick up my strength. After the illness I was kept strictly on a diet. When pain manifested itself, a mixture had to be taken. I dwelt under fear in this manner for two years, when I suddenly suffered a recurrence of the trouble and was again conveyed to the same hospital. The doctors immediately placed me under ice and gave me iced water to drink. This process continued for about nine or ten days. Then a mixture consisting of milk and egg was given by the spoonful every three hours.

My sister visited me during my detention in the hospital and spoke to me about Christian Science. I knew nothing about the teaching, although I had read a copy or two of the Christian Science Sentinel some time previously. It always appeared to me that one teaching was as good as another, if one lived up to a certain standard. My sister said, "Would you like to read 'Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'?" "Yes, I will read it," I replied. This wonderful book was brought me, and I took a great interest in it as I read it through. It seemed as if I were awakening from a dream—as if I knew in my consciousness there was something different in life from what I had been taught; the reading gave me great comfort.
