For nearly ten years before knowing of Christian Science...

For nearly ten years before knowing of Christian Science I suffered very severely from lung trouble (phthisis) and was attended by three doctors, but got no relief, the last doctor saying I would live only about three months. I spent many weary weeks in bed. Sometimes I was able to be up for a few weeks, and then I would have to go to bed again, worse than before. I grew so weak that I could not retain any solid food, and felt myself a burden to my parents and those around me.

I often used to lie and read the Bible, especially the passages which told of the healings by Christ Jesus; but I began to doubt if there was a God at all, as I had prayed so many times to be well and useful. Then I was told of Christian Science. I borrowed the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, and began to study earnestly. I also had help from a Christian Science practitioner at times. Gradually I gained a better understanding of God, and also learned how to pray; and in less than three months I was completely healed of this disease, so that, instead of being a burden, I was able to go out and earn wages for myself.

I had another proof of the healing power of Truth at the close of 1918, when there was an epidemic of influenza. After nursing two members of the family who were ill with it, I was afraid and began to feel very ill myself. I tried to realize the truth, but made no progress and had to ask for help from a Christian Science practitioner. We were in a small village, with no other Scientists near, the practitioner living fourteen miles away; but a message was sent and treatment was lovingly given; also, the practitioner came out to me twice.
