Under the headlines, "A consumptive, adherent of Christian Science, a victim of her faith, dies without a doctor being called," there has appeared a notice in the press throughout the country saying that the police of Göteborg have been notified of the death in that city, from tuberculosis, of a young woman who was a Christian Scientist. Judging from the reports in the papers, one would naturally infer that a patient who dies under Christian Science treatment has in some way committed an offense against the doctors, the public, and himself; for the general belief is that a patient under that treatment is having nothing done for him! This is far from the truth. The fact is that, because Christian Science is Christian in basis and purpose, it tends to promote the health as well as the moral and spiritual welfare of its adherents. It is preventive as well as curative in its tendency. Christian Scientists pay strict attention to and obey the sanitary and hygienic demands of the law. Thousands of intelligent persons joyfully bear witness to its healing and redemptive power; for it has healed every known disease, and this in many instances after the case had been given up by doctors. Many doctors willingly admit this, and acknowledge the right of every adult to choose his physician as well as his religion. Christian Scientists admit that some cases are not healed under their treatment; and this is due to the fact that they have not, as yet, gained that full understanding of God, the absolute Principle of this religion, which would enable them to demonstrate it under all circumstances.
