Our Periodicals

The periodical publications issued by The Christian Science Publishing Society, under the supervision of The Mother Church, are constantly being sent out with their healing and educational messages into all parts of the civilized world. It would therefore be impossible to estimate the extent of their influence upon the world's thinking. Because the printed page is a most potent factor in influencing the thought of mankind, these periodicals, next to the Bible, our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," and Mrs. Eddy's other writings, constitute the greatest force for good there is in the world to-day.

It is not necessary to say which of the periodical publications is the most important. Each has its own place, and all are fulfilling the purpose for which they were established by Mrs. Eddy, to the extent that Christian Scientists have discerned that purpose, and are working obediently, intelligently, and wisely to carry out her plan. It would, therefore, be a mistake to exalt one of these publications above another, or to magnify the importance of one, while minimizing the importance of another.

Far be it from the thought of loyal Christian Scientists to depreciate the value of The Christian Science Monitor. Its value to mankind and to our Cause cannot be measured in terms which human thought can grasp. The Monitor, as we see it, is the best newspaper the world has known. It is already a marvel. It is better now than it ever was before; and it should be better a year hence than it is to-day, because those who are responsible for its publication are striving to be governed by the law of God, which, when understood and obeyed, becomes the law of progress in all our affairs. And to the extent that those responsible for its publication and distribution are governed by divine Principle instead of human policy, the Monitor will, as Mrs. Eddy declares in "The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany" (p. 353), fulfill the purpose for which it was founded—"to spread undivided the Science that operates unspent. The object of the Monitor is to injure no man, but to bless all mankind."
