A number of years ago my dear grandmother was healed...
A number of years ago my dear grandmother was healed in Christian Science, after being an invalid for thirty years. I was a little girl at the time, and had been taught the Bible from my earliest childhood. I loved it, but was always distressed about its accounts of creation, wondering how God could first make man in the image of Spirit and then make him out of dust. I dreamed of the healings of Jesus and longed for their reappearance, while yet believing that they could not reappear. When my grandmother's letter came, telling of her healing, my mother read it aloud to the minister and his wife, who were calling on us. My grandmother wrote that she had been healed by one who claimed to heal as Jesus did; and immediately I said that I believed it was true.
Some time later we moved to the city where my grandmother lived, and often went to the Christian Science meetings with her. Medicine, which had once held a very important place in our household, was discarded, and during my last year in high school I was healed of a very severe attack of lung trouble. But it took much longer for me to accept the teachings of Christian Science than it did to accept its healings. I was devoted to the church in which I had been brought up, and I resented the authority with which Mary Baker Eddy spoke. I did not then understand her place in Christian Science. I believed, and still I combated, the statements in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures;" and then I cried to be healed of my unbelief.
When, finally, I realized that the textbook was the result of Mrs. Eddy's search of the same old Bible that I loved, I began to see the light. I found that Mrs. Eddy had discovered this Science, not just because God had chosen her, but because she had chosen Him, and that I might have made this same discovery for myself if I had known enough or been consecrated enough; but I had not known enough, and had not been consecrated enough—and a great sense of gratitude came to me for this woman's great love for humanity. She had made it possible for me to understand God.
