[Written for the Sentinel]

Gratitude

I'm truly grateful, God, to Thee
For countless times of clearer sight,
Wherein the rays of Truth divine
Make bright the watches of the night!
What though the shadow may bring doubt?
What though the vale be dark and drear?
I know that Thou art leading me
Beyond the border of my fear!

For Love that does illuminate
Those channels that unconscious are
Of giving forth pure truth and love,
I am more grateful yet by far.
No studied art obstructs their way
With empty platitude or pose;
Thy love and care, beyond compare,
Are surely signified by those!

A word, a deed, expressing Thee,
Though simple, has a magnitude
That lifts the thought to dwell in Truth—
And there, in Love's great amplitude,
Is shown so clearly, without doubt,
The work to do, the place to be:
I now am praying more to see
The depth of Love's simplicity.
