Milngavie and Bearsden Herald

My attention has been drawn to a recent issue of the Milngavie and Bearsden Herald, where, in the "Ad Valorem" column, the question is asked, "What is Christian Science?" And an answer is given in the following words: "Christian Science represents the belief that disease, sin, and death can be defeated by faith." May I be allowed space to give a short answer to the question? Christian Science as a religious denomination was established by Mary Baker Eddy, its Discoverer and Founder, in Boston, U.S.A. Last July there were 2238 churches and societies organized throughout the world as branches of The Mother Church in Boston. The Christian Science Publishing Society, which is under the auspices of The Mother Church, publishes one of the best known daily newspapers in America, The Christian Science Monitor, as well as a weekly and three monthly religious magazines (one in English, one in English and German, and one in English and French) dealing with Christian Science and containing testimonies of healing. This development, unprecedented in religious history, could never have taken place as a result of mere belief or blind faith. Christian Science teaches its students to understand God, not only as the sole creator but as the healer of disease. Many people believe that disease, sin, and death can be defeated by faith—it may be faith in drugs, or in a healer, or in some religious cult—but Christian Science shows that faith, in order to produce scientific and permanent health, must rest on the correct understanding of God. Mrs. Eddy, in her book "Rudimental Divine Science" (), defines Christian Science as "the law of God, the law of good, interpreting and demonstrating the divine Principle and rule of universal harmony."
