Christian Science came to me with a revelation of great joy. The first healing I experienced was of a misconception of God. This healing came as I read my first Christian Science publication, a Christian Science Sentinel. Later, when the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, was read, I was healed of defective eyesight.

About four years ago, when aboard a battleship maneuvering off the Panamanian coast, I noticed one morning that my leg was severely swollen. Joyfully I made up my mind that Christian Science was to heal me. At that time I had studied Christian Science only a short time and knew nothing of its practical use. Assurance of seeing myself healed came, however, through the heavenly joy I was finding in its study. This joy assured me that the teaching was from God, and God would heal me if I stayed with Him.

My assurance went through a long trial. My little knowl edge of Christian Science proved to be ineffectual. In fact, I was getting worse all the time I was applying what I thought Christian Science was. The question, What should I do to be healed? was indeed a trying one, with no one aboard from whom to ask such a question, and about ten sailing days ahead of us. I then began to probe my thought to see if I could recall any practical ideas I had read in Science and Health. These came (ibid., p. 22): "If your endeavors are beset by fearful odds, and you receive no present reward, go not back to error, nor become a sluggard in the race." Immediately I turned to God and asked, "What must I do?" A thought responded, Read the book. As I read, a great change took place within me. All fear and pain vanished, and a great joy danced around my heart. One hour later I looked at my leg and it was healed.
