I was led to investigate Christian Science because of adverse...
I was led to investigate Christian Science because of adverse criticisms of it heard from the pulpit of an orthodox church. When I learned how much in error the sermon had been, I no longer had confidence in accepting what further sermons said, especially upon the books of the Bible, and realized that it was time that I think for myself, and become obedient to the command, "Work out your own salvation." This I am doing in Christian Science.
Although I took up the study of Christian Science for spiritual enlightenment, and can truthfully say that its message has been wholly spiritual, yet I have had many healings, healings that I did not know I was in need of—healings of wrong thinking and acting. I was also healed of fatigue and a false sense of burden. Some months before coming into Christian Science I had been told by a leading physician that unless I gave up a seemingly heavy schedule at a university where I was then teaching, I would not live under the strain of it. Later, in a conversation with a student of Christian Science, it was explained to me that God, being a God of love, does not prepare us for the work of serving His children and then in the course of a few years strike at us for doing that which He gave us to do. To reward us with suffering and disappointment is not the plan of an ever loving Father. This corrected my wrong thinking about the problem, and the following years have given me opportunities for greater service to mankind. And the ease with which it is done I owe to Christian Science, as it has taught me to place all responsibility with God, remembering that "I can of mine own self do nothing."
I have been healed of throat trouble, also nervous indigestion. From childhood I had tried not only many medicines and treatments, but also the best hospital care while suffering with quinsy. Then one winter an attack more severe than ever before presented itself, and I realized that at other times, under medical treatment, I had never been cured, but only relieved for the time being. I now had no desire to rely upon material means for recovery, so asked for Christian Science treatment. I was at school when the attack came on; a practitioner was called, and work was taken up immediately. The second day I was able to return to my home; and to this day there has never been a return of this sickness, which in previous years had meant weeks of suffering and always a slow recovery.
