[Written for the Sentinel]

"What manner of love"!

Behold what love! What wondrous love, indeed,
Hath God bestowed on him whom He calls son!
A Father-Mother-love that meets each need,
A love that strengthens till each fight is won!

What certain love! A love that never fails!
Firm, changeless, and eternal as His name—
A sure defense, no matter what assails;
A perfect guide—an ever burning flame.

A love that speaks in voice so soft and still,
Each must needs listen well if he would hear;
A love that silences tempestuous will—
A "peace be still" that brings God's presence near.

Oh, perfect love! In thy consuming fire
Sin is destroyed—its nothingness revealed.
Thou chastening love, that purifies desire,
Till each, desiring only good, is healed!

Thou all-absorbing love, unveiling right!
Before thy mighty power all error fades—
As shadows vanishing in glorious light Give place to light, that knows no dark'ning shades.

Inspiring love, whereby each soars in thought,
And leaves behind earth visions, dark with fear, Led on by love, straight to his Father brought,
He finds his Christly sonship now and here!
