The True Chord
IN studying harmony and the way in which musical compositions are built up, the student is struck by the innumerable possibilities of achievement which follow an understanding of the three notes of the common chord and its harmonies.
In endeavoring to find freedom of expression in any direction with that chord, should one fall into discord, there is always immediate security and a fresh start possible from a return to that fixed basis — the common chord. What pure enjoyment is gained from the use of those harmonies, not only by the one putting them into practice, but by all who may be fortunate enough to be within hearing of them!
What infinitely greater possibility of achievement opens out to the student of Christian Science as he endeavors to express in his daily living the harmony which is the true status of man! He soon finds that his hope lies in becoming acquainted with God, the triune Principle of all-harmonious being,— Life, Truth, and Love, — in keeping himself at-one with it, and in learning and practicing its harmonies. In the book of Job we read, "Acquaint now thyself with him, and be at peace: thereby good shall come unto thee." Through Christian Science, "this gift of God to the race," as our Leader calls it on page 382 of "Miscellaneous Writings," there is revealed to us how we may become acquainted with Him and be at peace. As in music a return to harmonv is always possible, so the student of Christian Science can always return to harmony, however discordant he may seem to have become, by going to the Father in thought and maintaining his right of sonship—his place in the Father's love.
