The Lectures

Introductions to Lectures

St. Paul, Minnesota (First Church).

Lecturer: Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie; introduced by Charles J. Andre, who said:—

Christian Science has transformed multitudes. When we become Christian Scientists, we truly begin to be born again in the sense which Jesus meant; but until the great truth of this Science dawns on human thought, it is the light shining in the darkness, which the darkness does not comprehend. It was at a Christian Science lecture, a number of years ago, that I first glimpsed the light of this Science, which was destined to revolutionize my thinking and change the course of my life. I recall vividly that, in the course of his remarks, the lecturer quoted from the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy (p. 468), "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter." I had been taught otherwise. To me matter had teemed with both life and intelligence, and seemed very substantial. Of course I thought he was mistaken; but after he had presented his arguments and proofs in support of the proposition, I began to realize that perhaps I had been mistaken.
