In 1918, I returned from Hamburg, Germany, to my native country, after suffering deprivations during the war time. These years were very sorrowful for me, and consequently my nerves were in a bad condition. After a short time I lost my business position here in Holland, and was incapable of providing for my family. In seven years I had consulted several first-class doctors, who told me that I was suffering from severe neurasthenia; and among others, a doctor at a municipal hospital, a nerve specialist, pronounced my case incurable from a medical point of view. I also stayed for about two months in a sanatorium for nervous troubles, but had to leave it because I was going from bad to worse. I suffered so severely at times that I thought life was not worth living, and it seemed to me that the only way out was to commit suicide, which I actually tried to do.

When I became interested in Christian Science, a good friend of mine introduced me to a Christian Science practitioner in this town, who for some months gave me treatment and helped me to understand how to study "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. Then I felt a sweet sense of God's protection and power, and I found Him to be a present help in time of trouble. I learned that God made man in His image and likeness. I learned also to understand and demonstrate Jesus' saying, "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Now I am perfectly healed of the nervous complaint, and am full of vigor and hope for the future. Lately I found employment.

Words cannot express my great gratitude to Mrs. Eddy for Christian Science. I am deeply grateful to the dear practitioner who has helped me so lovingly from darkness to light.
