Nearly all my life I had been a sufferer from chronic indigestion and heart trouble, until seventeen years ago, when I was healed in about three weeks through reading "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had been treated by some of the best and most conscientious specialists in the South, who thought my case very serious. One of the physicians finally said that medicine only aggravated the condition, and advised me to take as little of it as possible. I traveled all over the United States and several foreign countries, but received only temporary relief. Such was my condition at the time that even a swallow of water would upset my stomach, unless the water was slightly warm. I can now eat and enjoy anything that any one else can, for the power of Truth has dispelled the delusion of material laws.

Just before coming into Christian Science I was told by a prominent physician, after a careful examination, that I would have to be operated upon for appendicitis. I did not then take up Christian Science for the healing, but decided to read it to find out why others could imagine there was anything in it. I was not in a receptive mood, but forced myself, as I then thought, to read Science and Health through. Now I know that Truth was leading me to the light, But every page that I read seemed to stir me up and aggravate me beyond measure. I would read a little, and then feel very angry. I could see no sense in it; nor did I begin to understand until I had nearly completed the book. I then began to read it again, and it became clear and beautiful to me as I progressed, and I was soon reading the Bible also, and learned to understand and love it. I had not read the Bible for many years before coming into Christian Science, as I could never understand it and had ceased even to pretend to believe in it; and for over fifteen years I had not been inside of a church. I was almost unconsciously healed of stomach trouble and the smoking habit. At the same time I was healed of the heart trouble and chronic constipation, for which I had taken medicine continually every day or two for fifteen years. All signs of appendicitis entirely disappeared.

As to the application of Christian Science in business, I wish to say that in my position as an official of a large public service corporation, besides dealing with the public I had to direct and supervise to a great extent the activities of a large number of employees throughout a considerable territory, and my knowledge of Christian Science was a constant blessing in teaching me to be considerate of others. It proved to me that the power of Love is more potent in dealing with my fellow-man than the harsh methods that mortal mind often suggests; and whatever problem may arise I know I can never fail in my efforts to bring about a correct and harmonious solution through the application of the teachings of Christian Science.
