In the Express recently the question was asked, "Was the success of ... Mary Baker Eddy and other famous healers due to their knowledge of divine guidance, masked or otherwise, behind materia medica?" Christian Science, the religion founded by Mary Baker Eddy, relies entirely upon spiritual guidance and divine power. If a Christian Scientist were to turn partly to material methods in healing, this would be to doubt God's almightly power; and it would be detrimental to the recovery of the patient. Christ Jesus said: "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other;" and, "It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing."

The direct answer to the question is that materia medica had absolutely no connection with the healing works of Mrs. Eddy, which were accomplished in the same way as Christ Jesus healed, namely, through the spiritual understanding of God and of the perfection of man, who is the image and likeness of God.
