Will you kindly grant me sufficient space in your valuable paper for the purpose of correcting some misstatements regarding Christian Science which were made by a minister of this city, as reported in your recent issue?

The minister claims that Christian Science is a concoction "brewed from the devil's pot and is veneered with tinsel, garlanded with ritualism, flavored with worldly show," et cetera, and that it avoids reference to sin or atonement, accepts only a portion of the Scriptures, and further, that the proper term for Christian Science is "Eddyism," which "is neither 'Christian' nor 'scientific.'" Of course, we can appreciate the apparent unwillingness or lack of desire on the part of our critic to understand Christian Science, but this does not warrant him in making statements so entirely at variance with the facts.

Mrs. Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, says in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 234) that "ritualism and creed hamper spirituality;" and one who knows even a little of Christian Science is conscious that ritualism, or anything of a gaudy or worldly nature, is entirely foreign to its teachings and practice. Furthermore, the teachings of Christian Science are not based on a portion of the Scriptures, but on the whole of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation. In the Christian Science textbook Mrs. Eddy devotes thirtyeight pages, or one whole chapter, to the atonement; and probably no subject in her book receives more attention than does sin, notwithstanding our critic's statement to the contrary. To say that "Eddyism" is the proper term for Christian Science is absurd, and entirely gratuitous. Mrs. Eddy most appropriately named her discovery "Christian Science;" and no one can consistently deny that in doing so she displayed great wisdom and foresight.
