Letters from the Field
"Having received the blessing of being a guest at the Christian Science sanatorium, I could not leave Boston without desiring to express my gratitude. When leaving the sanatorium, I felt clearly conscious that during the eleven weeks spent there I had taken nearly as big a step upward in my spiritual journey as I had taken when first turning to Christian Science years ago.
"I entered the sanatorium with an abnormal growth in the abdomen, a slight heart difficulty, intense inward fever, spinal disease, and congestion at the base of the brain. Often there were periods of time when it seemed impossible to turn to either side. For a while, fainting would follow any attempt to sit up. Frequently there were hours of semiconscious stupor. All these dark dreams have disappeared. I am very grateful for the physical healing, but still more deeply grateful for the mental readjustment—for the growth in spiritual vision that makes me think more truly than before about the heavenly Father's tender care of all His children, also about home, relatives, friends, church, and position.
"When arranging for the trip from Berkeley, California, to Boston, a friend expressed regret that I was going to see so much sickness gathered together under one roof. But, oh, how different is the fact from what she thought it to be! That which stood out most prominently to me in practitioners, nurses, and associates—and in guests, too—was radiant expectancy. Almost all are so busy in the joyous habit of knowing the truth and thereby unseeing the lies of material sense that I seldom even for a moment felt conscious of sickness about me. On the contrary, I felt uplifted and full of gratitude for being one of the many who were both receiving and giving, and thereby helping to make the sanatorium the wonderful place it is.
